How to sleep better for National Bed Month

There's no better time to consider your sleep and how it is effecting you than during National Bed Month. Achieving a good night's sleep is often a problem for many of us, so we've put together some sleep tips to help you drift off into the land of nod this March.

Investment in your Sleep

Your bed is an investment, so make sure that it's comfortable and supportive. With the correct support, comfort and space, you can be sure that you will be less likely to wake throughout the night, as well as being less likely to wake up aching, or feeling tired. So when choosing a new bed, make sure both you and your partner go together, and trial out a variety of different beds to figure out which one would best suit you.

Healthy Lifestyle

A big mistake for many people, is over eating just before bed time, as this will definitely keep you awake counting sheep. Try to eat foods with sleep-promoting chemicals such as chicken and turkey, peanuts, beans and milk. All of these kinds of foods should keep you relaxed and make it easier for you to drift off. Adopting an active lifestyle will also contribute to seamless, restful sleep.

Clock Watching

Clock watching can actually increase your stress levels, so instead of staring at the clock and stressing over how many hours of sleep you've lost, put your clock out of sight and try to relax. Reading before bed is also a great way to de-stress and unwind after a stressful day. It allows your mind to focus on the book rather than a pool of thoughts and worries that can consume your mind. So this is a great tip if you have worries that are keeping you awake at night.

Routines

Having a routine can really play a great part in a successful night's sleep. Our bodies thrive on routine, so where possible, try sticking to one. This could be as simple as putting on your pyjamas and cleaning your teeth. A simple bedroom routine like this signals the brain that it's time for bed, allowing you to relax and unwind.
