Bristol Balloon Fiesta

Did someone say it's almost time for the 41st Bristol Balloon Fiesta? It's one of the biggest events on the Bristolian calendar and is the largest hot air ballooning event in Europe that runs from the 8-11 of August 2019 at Ashton Court Estate. This fantastic event attracts over 130 ballons from across the world and has morning and afternoon rides including the famous Nightglows display where the balloons light up the sky in time to coordinated music.

The event is free of charge with charges made only for parking on the event site. Of course, the balloon fiesta is not the only entertainment on show across the weekend, visitors can also expect to see a large number of trade stands, fairground rides and much more entertainment.

What's The Plan?

As previously stated the fiesta begins on Thursday 8th August at midday with hot air balloons tethered throughout the afternoon and into the evening where at 9pm 25 of the in-flight balloons transform into huge light bulbs which glow in time to a specifically commissioned soundtrack. The evening is then finished with a spectacular firework finale.

On day two Friday the 9th of August, there will be two mass hot air balloon lifts at 6am and 6pm, a model hot air balloon competition and an afternoon of Balloon Tethering.

On day three Saturday the 10th of August the mass air balloon lifts will continue and will run at 6am and 6pm. In the evening, the most iconic part of the fiesta the Nightglows and Firework display will begin at 9pm. This is when a collection of balloons tether and light up the night’s sky in time to a soundtrack of music.

On the fiesta's final day Sunday the 11th of August is another day full of mass balloon lifts and fun in the arena, with a programme running from midday to 5pm.

Other Entertainment

The fiesta offers a lot more than mass balloon lifts with plenty of activities on offer throughout the weekend for all the family. Every morning at 6am you can enjoy ‘Breakfast and Balloons’ in partnership with Eat Natural and watch the balloons take to the sky as the sun rises while enjoying a breakfast picnic.

In between the famous mass ascents, the Arena will play host to some stellar entertainment live performances throughout the weekend, including the best up-and-coming local music and some explosion of energy and colour in the form of North Somerset Samba, who will be playing their upbeat, carnival-style samba. They will be playing in the arena both Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th.

Returning to the arena for another year is Bristol sport, who will bring exciting coaching and exhibition sessions to the fiesta with visitors also having the chance to participate in sessions with the Bristol Bears, Bristol City, Bristol City Ladies and the Bristol Flyers. On Thursday, Bristol City will carry out activities with young visitors who would like to join them in the arena, whilst Friday afternoon will offer opportunities visitors to join Coach Pat Lam of Bristol Bears Rugby and the whole squad in the arena, where they will be involved in demonstrations and coaching activities, plus autograph signings.

Bringing more entertainment to the skies is the Lightning Bolt Army Parachute Display Team. Established in 1966 the team are experienced in displays of all sizes, and have even starred in Hollywood blockbusters. They specialise in thrilling, high adrenaline shows, which allow crowds to watch in awe, as each jumper exits the aircraft, creates a visible formation and then deploys their coloured parachute before landing in the arena.

The Fiesta’s partnership with Aardman Animations will see the introduction of Aardman’s ticketed Model Making Workshops on Sunday afternoon that will see visitors get creative with clay. Run by Aardman’s team of expert model makers, visitors will have the chance to create some of their favourite characters within the Member’s Enclosure.
